Dental Fillings in Raleigh, NC
Few things in dentistry are as routine as a filling — and few problems get expensive as fast as a cavity you ignore. The decay that’s painless now keeps creeping toward the nerve, and once it gets there, a simple filling turns into a root canal plus a crown. That’s the whole case for handling it early. At our office off Louisburg Road near I-540, a filling is usually a one-and-done visit with tooth-colored composite, quick enough to work around a busy North Raleigh week of school runs, shift work, and everything in between.

Reasons We Place a Filling
Enamel is the hardest material your body makes, but it still gives ground to acids and daily wear. A filling steps in for:
- Decay and cavities — the leading reason; the filling seals the gap so bacteria can’t keep boring inward.
- Eroded or worn teeth — grinding and acidic foods thin enamel, and a filling restores what’s been lost.
- Temperature sensitivity — usually exposed dentin near the gumline, which a filling can shield.
- Small fractures and chips — a little crack from a hard bite, sealed before it widens.
Composite Fillings and Other Materials
The default at our Raleigh office is composite — a resin tinted to your enamel that bonds onto the tooth and all but vanishes once it’s polished. It’s what we use for anything you’d see when you smile. We can talk through alternatives where they make sense: amalgam holds up under heavy chewing but carries a metallic gray look, and gold, ceramic, and glass ionomer serve more specific cases. For the great majority, composite checks every box.
Your Filling Visit, Step by Step
It’s a straightforward appointment. If the depth of the decay needs checking, a quick X-ray settles it, and then the tooth is numbed. Next we remove the decayed area, ready the surface for bonding, and add the composite in light layers, curing each with a bright light until it’s solid. The final touch is contouring and polishing so it sits flush with your bite — no high spot when you close. Start to finish, one filling rarely takes more than an hour.
Aftercare
You’re clear to eat once the numbness lifts; just ease back in. To protect the new filling:
- Steer clear of hard or chewy foods for the rest of the day.
- Keep brushing and flossing, with a gentle touch near the filling.
- Brief cold sensitivity across the following days is routine.
- If a sharp pain hangs on or the bite feels high beyond the first days, give us a call for a fast adjustment.
When a Filling Isn't the Right Fix
Honesty saves you money here. Where a cavity has spread wide, or a tooth already carries a crack or several old repairs, the remaining structure may be too thin to grip fresh filling material — and forcing it risks a break down the line. A crown or an onlay that caps the tooth is the better bet; when the nerve is caught up in the decay, a root canal precedes it. We’ll lay the imaging in front of you and let you choose.
Cost and Insurance
Expect a filling at our Raleigh office to come in around $200 to $500 for the tooth — least for a simple front-tooth repair, most for a multi-surface molar. Insurance tends to be kind to fillings, often footing 80 percent up to the entire cost, and we pull your coverage details in advance so the checkout number is no mystery. Anything left over splits neatly into payments through CareCredit, Sunbit, and the O2 Advantage Plan.
Dental Fillings FAQ — Raleigh
What does a filling cost?
About $200–$500 a tooth — the simpler and more forward the tooth, the lower the figure. Insurance is generous here, frequently 80 percent up to the full cost, and we confirm yours beforehand.
How long does it take?
One appointment, typically wrapped inside an hour.
Will it hurt?
The tooth’s numb before we begin, so you’ll notice pressure rather than pain. A little temperature sensitivity in the days after is routine.
How do I know I need one?
Small cavities are usually silent — that’s what checkups are for. A twinge on sweets, a catch when you bite, or a rough edge your tongue keeps finding are the tells.
What if it's too far gone?
Then we steer you toward a crown or onlay that wraps the tooth, with root canal care first if the nerve’s affected.

How much does a filling run?
Generally $200 to $500 for the tooth, by its position and the number of surfaces. Insurance usually covers most or all of it, confirmed before we start.
Is it really just one visit?
Yes — a single filling is usually finished in under an hour, start to bite-check.
Do fillings hurt?
No — the tooth is numbed first, so you’ll feel pressure at most. Brief cold sensitivity afterward is normal.
Will it show?
Composite is shade-matched and bonded to the tooth, so on a visible tooth it’s hard to spot.
What if it's too big for a filling?
We’ll say so — a crown or onlay is sturdier, and with CEREC many crowns are same-day here. Nerve involvement means a root canal first.
