Tooth Extraction Cost: What You'll Pay at O2 Dental Group

Trusted dentist in Durham NC

If a tooth hurts badly enough that you’re searching for this, you probably want two answers: what it costs, and how fast you can get it done. Here are both, using the prices we charge at all six of our North Carolina offices.

O2 extraction prices, per tooth:

Simple or surgical: what decides your price

You can’t tell which category a tooth falls into by looking in the mirror, which is why every extraction starts with an exam and X-rays. Here’s what the dentist is looking for.

Simple extraction, $200–$400

The whole tooth is visible above the gum and in one piece, and the roots look straightforward on the X-ray. The dentist numbs the area, loosens the tooth and lifts it out. Most take well under an hour. Where you land in the range depends mostly on the tooth: a front tooth with one root is quicker than a lower molar with three.

Surgical extraction, $300–$800

The tooth has broken off at or below the gumline, has curved or fused roots, or is locked in dense bone. The dentist may need to open the gum or section the tooth into pieces to remove it without damaging nearby bone. That takes more time and skill, which is what the higher range reflects.

Wisdom teeth, $200–$1,200

A wisdom tooth that has come in fully is priced much like any other back tooth, $200 to $600. An impacted one, still partly or fully trapped under gum or bone, runs $400 to $1,200 per tooth, depending on how deep it sits and which way it’s angled. Every O2 office has a 3D CBCT scanner, so we can see exactly where an impacted tooth is relative to the nerve before we start.

All six offices handle extractions in-house, including wisdom teeth. Now and then a case is complex enough that a referral is the safer choice, for example a deeply impacted tooth sitting against the nerve. If that’s you, we’ll tell you at the consultation, before you’ve paid for anything beyond the exam.

Three real-world examples

A cracked molar that’s been aching for a week, no insurance.

Emergency exam and X-rays, $87. The tooth is intact above the gum, so it’s a simple extraction, $200 to $400. Total: $287 to $487.

A tooth that broke off at the gumline, and you want an implant later.

Surgical extraction, $300 to $800, plus a bone graft at the same visit, $400 to $800, to keep the bone ready for the implant. Total before the implant: $700 to $1,600. Or see the implant bundle below, which can cost less overall.

Two impacted lower wisdom teeth.

$400 to $1,200 each, so $800 to $2,400 for both, depending on depth and angle. The 3D scan at your consultation narrows that to a firm number.

In every case, you get a written estimate before the extraction is scheduled.

Comfort options

Every extraction is done with local anesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain. If you’re anxious, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or an oral anti-anxiety medication taken before the appointment. If you choose oral medication, plan on someone driving you home. Any sedation cost is listed on your written estimate. More on sedation options.

Should you replace the tooth?

For a wisdom tooth, no. For most other teeth, it’s worth thinking about before the extraction, because the answer can change what happens that day.

When a tooth is gone, the bone that held it starts to shrink and the teeth on either side can drift into the gap. That’s why a bone graft at extraction is worth considering if an implant is a possibility later. It preserves the site for $400 to $800 now and avoids a bigger grafting procedure down the road.

The single-implant bundle: $3,997

For a limited time, O2 offers a single-implant bundle that covers the extraction, the bone graft, the implant placement and a temporary tooth for $3,997. Implants are placed in-house at every office. Your written estimate spells out anything outside the bundle. Learn more on our dental implants page.

Other ways to fill the space include a dental bridge or a partial denture. The dentist can walk you through the trade-offs at your exam.

Paying for an extraction

With insurance

Most dental plans cover extractions, usually at a lower percentage than cleanings and after your deductible. Some plans file surgical and wisdom tooth extractions under oral surgery, with their own terms. We verify your plan and give you an estimate before treatment. O2 is in network with Delta Dental, Blue Cross NC, UnitedHealthcare and the TRICARE Dental Program, among others.

Without insurance

O2 Advantage Plan members save 20% on extractions and grafts. Membership starts at $25 a month and includes routine cleanings, exams and X-rays. Join before your extraction and the discount applies right away. With the plan, a simple extraction becomes $160 to $320.

Monthly payments

Sunbit and CareCredit let you spread larger bills, like multiple extractions or the implant bundle, over time. See financing options.

Extraction cost questions

How much does it cost to pull a tooth without insurance?

$200 to $400 for a simple extraction and $300 to $800 for a surgical one. If it hurts now, start with the $87 emergency exam and X-rays.

$200 to $600 for an erupted wisdom tooth, $400 to $1,200 for an impacted one, per tooth.

Only if you might want an implant there later, or the tooth is somewhere visible where bone loss would show. It’s $400 to $800 when done at the extraction.

Often, yes. Our offices see emergencies the same day when the schedule allows, and many simple extractions can be done at that visit after the exam and X-rays.

Most plans do, usually at a lower percentage than preventive care and after the deductible. We’ll check your plan first.

Our limited-time single-implant bundle is $3,997 and includes the extraction, bone graft, implant placement and a temporary tooth.

Stop guessing. Get it checked.
