Dental Fillings In North Carolina

A filling is the most common restoration in dentistry, and for good reason: it stops a cavity in its tracks while the fix is still small. The trouble with decay is that it doesn’t hurt until it’s deep, so by the time a tooth aches, the simple filling has often become a crown and a root canal. That’s why O2 Dental Group treats cavities promptly across our six North Carolina offices — usually in a single visit, with a tooth-colored filling that’s hard to tell from the tooth itself. This page covers what fillings do, the materials we use, what they cost, and how to find the office nearest you.

What a Filling Fixes

Enamel is the hardest substance the body produces, but acids, grinding, and time still wear it down. Dentists place a filling to handle:

  • Cavities — decay caught and sealed before it spreads toward the nerve.
  • Worn or eroded teeth — lost structure rebuilt on teeth thinned by years of use.
  • Sensitivity — exposed dentin near the gumline, covered to quiet the twinges.
  • Small chips and cracks — minor damage smoothed and sealed early.
  • Failing older fillings — replacements for ones that have cracked or started to leak.

Filling Materials

Most fillings we place are tooth-colored composite, a resin bonded directly to the tooth that blends invisibly and works well on any visible tooth. It’s the default for the great majority of patients. A few other materials have their place, and your dentist will recommend what suits the specific tooth:

    • Silver amalgam — exceptionally durable and proven over decades, long the pick for molars, with its metallic gray look as the downside.
    • Gold — extremely durable and long-lived, though pricier and uncommon for routine fillings.
    • Ceramic — tooth-colored and rigid, well suited to certain visible restorations.
    • Glass ionomer — fluoride-releasing and useful in particular places such as along the gumline, though it wears faster where chewing forces run high.

One Visit, Start to Finish

A filling is a straightforward appointment. An X-ray confirms the depth of decay when that’s in question; we then numb the tooth, clear the decayed portion, and ready the surface for a secure bond. The composite goes in as thin layers, each set with a curing light, and a final shaping and polish ensures the bite feels natural. Most single fillings are finished in under an hour. At our Durham, Fayetteville, and Southern Pines offices, CEREC technology means that if a tooth turns out to need a crown instead, it can often be completed the same day.

When a Filling Isn't the Answer

We’re always honest about what a filling can and can’t do. If a cavity has spread too far, or a tooth is cracked or has been restored repeatedly, there may be too little healthy structure for a filling to grip — and an overstretched filling can leave the tooth prone to fracture. A crown or an onlay is the more durable option, and a root canal precedes the restoration whenever decay has reached the nerve. Your dentist will walk you through what they’re seeing.

Cost and Insurance

Across our offices, a filling generally costs $200 to $500 for the tooth, scaling with its location and the surfaces treated. Because fillings draw some of the most dependable insurance reimbursement in dentistry, most policies return the bulk of the fee — often all of it — and each office checks your coverage in advance so the figure is clear up front. For any remainder, the O2 Advantage Plan, with CareCredit and Sunbit, brings reduced rates and monthly payment options.
